The crown reminds us that Genoa was the Queen of the Sea: the “Dominant”.
The statue of Giano was placed above the crown, because it was believed that the name Genoa came from him. However, Genoa – like Rome and other cities – often dedicated places and solemnities to the double Italic two-faced.
